Alzheimer Europe set up the European Dementia Carers Working Group (EDCWG) in 2022. The members of the group are nominated by their national Alzheimer associations and serve three-year terms.
The EDCWG is comprised of a minimum of a maximum of 15 people people caring or having cared for a person with dementia (in principle each from a different country), all nominated by the member organisations of Alzheimer Europe.
Alzheimer Europe aims for gender balance in the EDCWG and will ensure that each sex is represented by at least 40% of the membership. Alzheimer Europe also welcomes carers with a non-binary or trans identity. Finally, Alzheimer Europe encourages nominations of young carers.
Alzheimer Europe supports the travel and accommodation costs of members of the EDCWG. The working language of the EDCWG is English: people wishing to join the EDCWG should be able to follow discussions and read documents in English and to express their ideas to the group in English.
In between meetings, e-mail exchanges will be organised and documents will be circulated as attachments to emails. Members of the EDCWG must therefore be able to use email (with support if necessary). The ability to use Zoom or other teleconferencing systems is essential.
