Harkin Marian (Member)


In the run-up to the European Parliament elections in May 2014, Marian Harkin, MEP (ALDE, Ireland) signed Alzheimer Europe's European Dementia Pledge, thus becoming a member of the EAA and affirming her support for greater EU collaboration on dementia.

Ms Harkin has been active in the area of mental health for years and has also previously attended an Alzheimer Europe lunch debate at the European Parliament in June 2012 on the topic of and also signed the EP Written Declaration 80/2008.

Ms Harkin on the Employment and Social Affairs Committee. She is a substitute on the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and the Petitions Committee. As of 24 February 2015, she also co-chairs an MEP Interest Group on Brain, Mind and Pain.

In her contributions to Alzheimer Europe's campaign to make dementia a European priority she:

  • participated in a lunch debate in the European Parliament in February 2018 on the potential for interventions in the earlier stages of dementia and dementia prevention
  • participated in a lunch debate in the European Parliament in December 2017 on improving the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease thanks to European research collaboration
  • signed EP Written Declaration 27/2016 to make dementia a top priority of the EU
  • hosted an information seminar in Galway, Ireland on issues relating to the delivery and accessibility of health services in the region-“Promoting good health in older age: engaging with Europe” with Maureen Mannion, Dementia Adviser, Alzheimer Society of Ireland who gave a talk on dementia
  • signed the Glasgow Declaration on 20 March 2015.
  • Joined the EAA in 2014.
