Rapporteur publishes report on EU4Health programme

Wednesday 24 June 2020

The Rapporteur for the European Union’s EU4Health programme, Cristian-Silviu Busoi MEP, has published his draft report, responding to the European Commission’s initial proposal for the programme. In his report, Mr Busoi welcomed the Commission proposal for a stand-alone EU4Health programme, including the significantly increased budget. He reiterated that only a separate and robust programme could ensure the EU had the capacity to respond to future pandemics and health threats, as well as ensuring that health systems are more resilient and able to address current weaknesses.

The report sets out a number of amendments and changes to the Commission’s initial proposal for the EU4Health programme, including:

  • A call for a greater focus on disease prevention and health promotion by addressing health risk factors
  • Support for the promotion of early diagnosis and screening for both communicable and non-communicable diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases
  • The identification of mental health and ageing as a particular challenge, particularly in light of the demographic challenges in Europe, including in the areas of early diagnosis, treatment, support and prevention, training of practitioners etc.
