Alzheimer Europe responds to draft WHO global action plan consultation

Wednesday 04 August 2021

Alzheimer Europe has submitted a response to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) consultation on the first draft of the intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders. Alzheimer Europe has previously responded to the discussion paper on the on the proposed global action plan, in which we welcomed the objectives of the plan, whilst noting some of our concerns about a broader and overarching approach to neurological conditions.

In the response to the draft plan, Alzheimer Europe:

  • Reiterated its support for the overarching objectives of the plan, including adopting a human rights-based approach
  • Sought clarity on the overlapping nature of the plan with other areas of WHO’s work, including the Global Action Plan on Dementia
  • Expressed reservations about the lack of recognition for the distinct nature of neurological and neurodegenerative conditions, particularly the progressive nature of the latter
  • Highlighted issues related to some of the aims and strategic objectives, including in relation to care pathways, service integration etc.
