National Dementia Strategies

A snapshot of the status of National Dementia Strategies around Europe

The Glasgow Declaration 2014 called for the creation of a European Dementia Strategy and national strategies in every country in Europe. The signatories also called upon world leaders to recognise dementia as a public health priority and to develop a global action plan on dementia.

The European Union conducts various activities to address the challenges of dementia; these can be found here. Nationally the number of countries recognising dementia as a priority and developing national strategies continues to grow.

The map below shows countries which already have a strategy in place. Germany are planning a strategy to build on the agenda they had previously adopted. Portugal, Romania and Slovakia all report dementia strategies in development and others have identified the need for one to be development.
