RICHARD Edo (Netherlands)

Dr. Edo Richard is a clinical neurologist who combines patient care, focusing on patients with memory problems and patients with stroke, with dementia research. His research focuses on prevention of dementia, for which he combines observational studies with large clinical trials. He leads two European dementia prevention projects, HATICE and PRODEMOS, both funded by the European Commission. Together with a team with expertise in ethics, sociology, philosophy, clinical medicine and biomedical sciences he studies the ethical and social implications of dementia prevention research, which includes disclosure of dementia risk with or without the use of biomarkers. The thin line between diagnostics and prognostics and the meaning of abnormal biomarkers in healthy persons lead to conceptual questions around health and disease. Dr. Richard studies the impact of these conceptual issues in the context of dementia prevention research.
