Manuel Martin-Carrasco (Spain)


Manuel Martin-Carrasco was bachelor of Medicine in 1983 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Navarra, where he earned a doctorate in 1990. He completed the specialty of Psychiatry in the Psychiatry Service of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital (Madrid), between 1984 and 1987, and his training in Psychogeriatrics in 1988 and 1989 at the Universities of Nottingham (UK) and Ottawa (Canada).

He has held the positions of Director of the Psychiatric Day Hospital (Hospital de Navarra), Psychogeriatric Consultant (Argibide Foundation, Pamplona), and Medical Director of the Father Menni Psychiatric Clinic of Pamplona from 1991 to 2012. Subsequently, from 2012 to 2017, he was coordinator of the Assistance Commission of the care network of The Sisters Hospitallers and Director of the Institute of Psychiatric Research (Mª Josefa Recio Foundation, Bilbao). Currently, since September 2017, he has returned to the medical direction of the Father Menni Psychiatric Clinica (Pamplona).

He is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Navarra and professor of the Master of Psychogeriatrics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

In his professional career as a psychiatrist it can be highlighted that he has served as President of the Spanish Psychogeriatric Society (2006-2009) and the Basque Navarre Society of Psychiatry (2007-2009). He was appointed Secretary of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry (2009-2012), and elected President of the Council of European Psychiatric Societies of the European Psychiatric Association (2015-2017). He has also coordinated the two Consensuses on Dementia of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry and Spanish Psychogeriatric Society (2000 and 2005), and the Consensus on Depression in the Elderly of the Spanish Psychogeriatric Society (2010). He is currently the Coordinator of the Dementia Working Group of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry.
