The STAR project is launching an online training portal for carers of Persons with Dementia. The portal provides 8 modules that are ideal for formal and informal carers at all competence levels, dealing with the most important day to day practical aspects of caring for people with dementia. The course content is already available in English, Dutch, Italian and Swedish and has been piloted in those countries with positive results.

The symposium launches the STAR online training platform and invites interested stakeholders to join in translating and adapting the courses, in order to make it available in further countries for long-term and sustainable operation. The platform and the course materials will be demonstrated, and experiences from piloting will be reported. The overall evaluation results will be mentioned, and its details will be presented in session P11.1 on Saturday 12th October.

The STAR training modules are

  1. What is dementia?
  2. Living with dementia
  3. Getting a diagnosis and why it is important
  4. Practical difficulties in daily life and how to help by best practice
  5. The emotional impact: How adaption and coping influences behaviour and mood
  6. Support strategies to help people cope with consequences of dementia
  7. Positive and empathic communication
  8. Emotional impact and looking after yourself.

STAR has the ambition to become a reference European training portal for dementia care, in collaboration with national stakeholders. The STAR project has been funded with support from the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission. This abstract reflects the views of the authors only.
