Miia Kivipelto


Miia Kivipelto, MD, PhD is Professor of Clinical Geriatric Epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet (KI), Center for Alzheimer Research and Head of the Clinical Trials Unit at the Memory Clinic, Karolinska University Hospital. She is also Research Director of Neuroepidemiology unit at University of Eastern Finland. She combines research with clinical activity, working also as senior geriatrician at the Memory Clinic, Karolinska University Hospital. Prof. Kivipelto is the principal investigator in the large populations based ‘Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Aging and Dementia’ (CAIDE) study’ and in ‘Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER). She is also responsible for a large clinical dataset (GEDOC) based on data collected at the memory Clinic (KI University hospital). Furthermore, Prof. Kivipelto initiated the Nordic Brain Network cooperation forum and the Network for Clinical Trials in Nordic Countries and she is also co-founder of the European Dementia Prevention Initiative. More recently, she has launched the Multimodal preventive trials for Alzheimer’s Disease: towards multinational strategies (MIND-AD) project.

Prof. Kivipelto has several PhD and post doc researchers in her group. She received numerous awards including the Association of European Psychiatrists Prevention Award in Psychiatry 2007 for her work concerning modifiable risk factors for AD, Academy of Finland award for Social Impact 2009, Junior Chamber International Prize 2011, KI Skandia Lennart Levi Prize 2013 and Axa Research Award 2014, and Best PI at KI 2014.

Due to her expertise and innovative initiatives, Prof. Kivipleto has recently been invited as an expert at the G8 Dementia Summit and several international networks and steering committees, including OECD data mapping for dementia and AD research and the Alzheimer Drug Discovery Foundation. Prof. Kivipelto is PI for Nordic countries in the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), which is the largest public-private partnership in health science field in Europe. She is frequently invited as a speaker to leading international conferences and is a member of scientific programme committees for conferences including the AAIC and the International Conference of Vascular Dementia.
