Alzheimer's Society joins call for care reform in the UK

Wednesday 18 June 2008

Throughout the UK, carers and relatives of people with dementia united and took the streets in order to highlight the need to improve the existing care system. One of the marches took place in Plymouth, where the chairman of the Plymouth Alzheimer society explained “Our day of action is to highlight that thousands of people with dementia and their carers are unfairly charged for essential care they need (…) The system discriminates against people with dementia because their needs are classed as ‘social care’ –means tested’ and not ‘health care’ which is generally free of charge on the NHS.”
