The Irish government has committed to developing a National Dementia Strategy by the end of 2013. It has taken a number of steps to achieve this, including the commissioning and publication of a research report on the evidence base for the development of an Irish dementia strategy. In addition, the government engaged in a consultation process with key stakeholders and produced a synthesis report that can be found on the website of the Irish Department of Health and also below

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland also published a comprehensive submission as part of this process. This report can be found here. A summary of this submission is available here and both reports can also be seen below.

The Department of Health has recently appointed a working group to develop the dementia strategy. This group comprises key stakeholder groups including clinicians, academics and representatives from the health services as well as the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, the key advocacy organisation for people with dementia and carers in Ireland. The focus of the working group is to shape the policy framework and develop an implementation plan for people with dementia and their carers over the next five years.
