Between 1966 and 1987 Sigurd Sparr graduated in medicine and further specialised in internal medicine, cardiology and geriatrics at the University of Oslo. He has held a university teaching position in geriatrics at the University Hospital Tromsoe since 1986 and has been head of the geriatric section and department there since 1988. He is also currently head of internal medicine at Narvik Hospital. He is a fellow of the Council of Geriatric Cardiology, leader of the “council for clinical ethics” at the University Hospital of Tromsoe, head of the Norwegian Alzheimer Association and board member of Alzheimer Europe. His publications to date are mainly focused on cardio-vascular issues as well as on medical ethics in the elderly and ethical controversies in the pharmacological treatment of the elderly. In 2008, he was awarded the Norwegian Order of Merit (the King’s Gold Medal) in recognition of his work in the field of dementia.
